We have asked our friend and colleague Ellen Goldman, Certified Wellness Coach and Founder of EnerG Coaching to be our guest blogger and to talk about a plan for a lifetime fitness strategy……… The following is Ellen’s guest blog:

When I was in my twenties, I took up running. I sprinted across my campus and surroundings, and then throughout the streets of Manhattan. In my thirties, I found myself in the suburbs of New Jersey, often running with my work supervisor. What fun business meetings we had! By my forties, I was in a new neighborhood, jogging with my beautiful golden retriever, Emmie. Now that I’ve entered my 5th decade, I must admit more times than not, my time is spent with intervals of jogging and fast walking, always with my goofy, adorable labradoodle, Ozzy.

My speed and style has most definitely changed, as have the scenery, companions, and even the source of music. Cassette players made way for CDs, and now it’s an iPod. But some things remain constant, and those are the benefits and payback for my time spent pounding the pavement.

My exercise always leaves me feeling calm and refreshed. Any worries or concerns seem less overwhelming after a good sweat session. Negativity decreases, and positivity emerges. My creative mind is open (as a matter of fact, I wrote this in my mind during my last few sessions). I am left feeling strong, open, relaxed, and energized, reinforced with the fortitude to handle anything that comes my way.

The rewards of my efforts exceed the momentary sense of well being. More than one of my physicians has joked that they wish their pulse, blood pressure and blood profiles looked as good as mine. I’ve enjoyed a fairly stable body weight and composition since college, and a recent bone density test resulted in my being in the normal range, rather than osteopenia as so many of my contemporaries have recently been diagnosed.

Now please don’t think I am bragging. It is just reassuring to know that my personal research project of one is backed by tons of evidence-based research supporting the benefits of exercise. So, I can’t help wonder why many people aren’t exercising enough to achieve the undisputed health benefits of lifetime fitness. How come so many individuals struggle to make exercise a part of their lifestyle?

Throughout my years of training and personal wellness coaching, I’ve attempted to help clients overcome the challenge of making room in an already overcrowded life to fit in exercise. One of the number one reasons I hear for not exercising is a lack of time. I’ve often thought, “If you could just experience the many benefits, surely you would make the time.”

You may be thinking this all comes so easily for me, being that I have been exercising religiously for the past 30 years. Hiking in Wyoming, I met a couple that were in there 80’s, but didn’t look a day over 70. They shared with me that they both started exercising only 10 years earlier, after the husband suffered a heart attack. Both of them had shining eyes, straight backs, slim and strong looking bodies, and smiles that could light up a room. So no matter what your age, it’s never too late to start and enjoy the benefits of a well thought out exercise plan.

But how do you go from not working out at all, to being a committed lifetime fitness participant? I’ve pondered this question over the years, and here are the tips I believe to be the most helpful.

1. Connect with your personal greatest motivators. Everyone knows why they “should” be exercising, but why do you want to? What benefits of a regular routine would mean the most to you? Is it more energy, weight loss, a firmer body, the desire to avoid or reduce blood pressure or diabetes medicine, or just the time to unwind, release stress, and have fun? Make a list of your reasons, and remind yourself frequently of what you are working towards.

2. Identify your exercise style. If time for yourself to think, unwind and relax is what you’re after, a solo activity like walking or swimming might be your best choice. If you love competition, tennis or basketball might work. Love to socialize? Try group exercise classes or golf. Don’t fight your nature; think about what makes you the happiest and try to match the activity to the circumstances.

3. Start slow and be realistic. If you have never been a regular exerciser, or been away from it for a while, ease into activity. Don’t attempt to go from not exercising at all, to exercising every day. There is nothing more discouraging than making the decision to work out, and then being so sore and uncomfortable the next day you can hardly move, or worse yet, suffer an injury. Set realistic goals such as three times a week for 15 minutes, and progress once that feels routine and manageable.

4. Schedule your exercise time into your daily calendar. Whether you keep a hand written planner, a computer calendar, or a PDA, review your week, plan your exercise sessions, and put them in as a scheduled activity. Create a fall back plan if something unexpected and unavoidable prevents you from keeping your scheduled time.

5. Monitor your progress. Look back at your reasons for wanting to exercise, and find a way to measure the benefits you are getting from regular participation in your activity of choice. If you have stuck to your program for a couple of months and are not achieving what you set out to do, consult with a certified personal trainer, fitness consultant or personal wellness coach to assess the program you are following. Motivation remains high when you are feeling the rewards for your work.

6. Reward your consistent efforts. Although most of the rewards for consistently sticking to a great exercise routine are intrinsic, it’s fun to build in some extrinsic ones as well. Plan for a massage or facial for each time you complete thirty exercise sessions. Buy a new outfit after the results of your yearly physical leave you and your doctor pleased. Or celebrate your increased endurance by signing up and participating in a race for a cause.

Follow the tips and be patient. As you ease regular exercise into your lifestyle, you will experience rewards that will keep you motivated and continually working at lifetime fitness and health and wellness.

Another home fire with fatalities has been reported in our area again today. Unfortunately devastating fires can happen at any time. Lives may be saved by acting quickly and being able to evacuate a burning structure.

Below are some scary 2009 statistics from The National Fire Protection Association:

Fire departments responded to a fire every 23 seconds.

One structure fire was reported every 66 seconds.

One home structure fire was reported every 87 seconds

One civilian fire injury was reported every 31 minutes.

One civilian fire death occurred every 2 hours and 55 minutes.

One outside fire was reported every 49 seconds.

One vehicle fire was reported every 146 seconds.

92% of all civilian structure fire deaths resulted from home structure fires.

Cooking is the leading cause of home structure fires and home fire injuries.

Kitchens are the leading area of origin for home structure fires (41%) and civilian home fire injuries (36%).

Only 4% of home fires started in the living room, family room, or den; these fires caused 23% of home fire deaths.

8% of reported home fires started in the bedroom. These fires caused 24% of home fire deaths, 21% of home fire injuries, and 15% of the direct property damage.

Smoking is a leading cause of civilian home fire deaths.

December, January and February were the peak months for reported home structure fires and home fire deaths.

Almost two-thirds (63%) of reported home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Most fatal fires kill one or two people. In 2009, 9 home fires killed five or more people. These 9 fires resulted in 59 deaths.

If any of this can be prevented by owning a Portable Fire Escape Ladder to be able to escape an upper level floor of a building isn’t it worth it to be prepared?

Be Safe Plus LLC has recently added the Safe-Escape line of Fire Safety Ladders to their inventory. Ready to go, the steel chain fire escape ladders are 15 foot 25 foot, or 45 foot with 3 choices of Hook sizes (9.5, 14, or 18 inches) for Two to Five Story Dwellings

Safe – Escape ranges from two to five stories long (15 to 45 feet) and are made of zinc-plated 18 gauge steel that’s been chain-tension tested to hold up to 1,000 pounds. They’re designed to be stored underneath a bed or window, and come in models suitable for walls up to 18 inches thick. Each comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Prices range from $69.95 for a two-story, 15-foot ladder for 10-inch walls to $204.95 for a four- to five-story, 45-foot ladder for 14- to 18-inch walls. The Safe Escape products join Kidde and First Alert on the Be Safe Plus safety web pages.

The fairly modest price range means home owners, co-op shareholders and condo unit-owners can buy these personal fire ladders themselves — or even a safety conscious condominium board can purchase them in bulk to distribute to their residents. Parents should prepare college students living in a dorm situation or off campus in apartments with fire safety ladders as well as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Every building over one story tall should have a means of escaping safely from upper floors in-case of fire.

Take a look and compare models and manufactures but act now, don’t let the ones you love add to the statistics.

Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless radioactive gas that is a decay product of uranium that naturally occurs in soil and rock. The 2nd leading cause of lung cancer, Radon causes 15,000 to 21,000 deaths in the United States annually and has been found and identified in every state. Once produced, radon moves through the ground to the air above while portion remains in the earth and dissolves in underground water. It is estimated that over 6% of every home in the United States has elevated levels of radon that may need remediation. The Environmental Protection Agency and many state governments recommends Radon testing. The EPA states that any Radon exposure carries some risk. Radon levels are measured in picocuries. A picocurie (pCi) is a measure of the rate of radioactive decay of Radon. Remediation is suggested if the levels average 4 picocuries per liter or higher ( pCi/L) Unless Radon is tested for, there is no way of knowing how much Radon is present. Some states require radon testing for real estate transactions including property transfer or for mortgage approval on a planned property purchase. If Radon levels are not within an acceptable range within a planned purchase, ventilation remediation may be required before the sale will go through.

Only smoking causes more cases of lung cancer than does Radon exposure . If you smoke and are exposed to higher than normal Radon levels your risk of lung cancer is elevated. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a Radon risk comparison chart available for those who smoke and who have never smoked. The problem is that Radon gas decays into radioactive particles that can become trapped in your lungs. Over the course of a lifetime, lung tissue may become damaged. Breathing of Radon does not cause any short-term bad health effects such as fever, headaches or shortness of breath and everyone that is exposed to high radon levels will not develop lung cancer, but the potential risk is higher than usual. Radon in drinking water also poses some risk, but research shows those risks are much lower than those risks from breathing radon in the air.

Most indoor Radon comes into a building from the soil or rock beneath it. The Radon becomes trapped under a building and builds up pressure. The built up pressure forces the gases through cracks and other openings in a building and become concentrated. Because Radon levels are not predictable, it is wise to purchase an inexpensive Radon test to determine if levels are unacceptable in a home or building.

What is the Radon testing procedure?

Radon testing is inexpensive and easy. To perform a radon test simply follow the instructions provided and return the radon sampling bag in the self-addressed envelope. All that is required to collect the sample is to open the package and place the sampler in the area to be tested. The test start date and time and the completion date and time are recorded on the supplied data card that is returned with the collected sample The sampler should be exposed to the environment in the area being tested for 2 days. The cost of the kit includes a laboratory analysis fee and the detailed report, which will be sent to you .

The Report Includes The Information On: Report Date, EPA ID Number, State ID #, Lab ID #, Kit ID #, Radon Level Measured (pCi/L), Test Location, Test Type, Start and Stop Date and Time, Test Method, Radon Health Risk, Explanation of results, Recommended next steps required based on radon level.

Be Proactive. Don’t wait until someone falls ill, or you are contemplating selling your home to test the levels of Radon in your residence. Stay healthy, Be Safe.

Is your child old enough or better yet, responsible enough to operate a lawn mower? Every year there are countless lawn mower related injuries treated in emergency rooms that may be preventable. Prior to allowing a child to mow the lawn, parents and other responsible adults must be aware of the hazards involved and be absolutely certain that children as well as adult operators understand safe lawn mower operating procedures.

To prevent lawn mower injuries to children, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following:

Try to use a mower with a control that stops the mower from moving forward if the handle is let go.

Children younger than 16 years should not be allowed to use ride-on mowers. Children younger than 12 years should not use walk-behind mowers.

Make sure that sturdy shoes (not sandals or sneakers) are worn while mowing.

Prevent injuries from flying objects, such as stones or toys, by picking up objects from the lawn before mowing begins.

Use a collection bag for grass clippings or a plate that covers the opening where cut grass is released.

Have anyone who uses a mower wear hearing and eye protection.

Make sure that children are indoors or at a safe distance well away from the area that you plan to mow.

Start and refuel mowers outdoors, not in a garage or shed. Mowers should be refueled with the motor turned off and cool.

Make sure that blade settings (to set the wheel height or dislodge debris) are done by an adult, with the mower off and the spark plug removed or disconnected.

Do not pull the mower backward or mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary, and carefully look for children behind you when you mow in reverse.

Always turn off the mower and wait for the blades to stop completely before removing the grass catcher, unclogging the discharge chute, or crossing gravel paths, roads, or other areas.

Do not allow children to ride as passengers on ride-on mowers.

Enjoy the upcoming season Safely!

March 20-26 2011 is Poison Prevention Week. Read this post to become more aware of the poisoning problem and what steps you should take to help reduce poisoning risk in your home. The definition of a poison is any substance, including medications that is harmful to your body if too much is eaten, inhaled, injected, or absorbed through the skin. When no harm is meant to be caused this is called unintentional or accidental poisoning. The misuse of medicines, cosmetics, household products, cleansers, pesticides and insecticides all can be poisonous.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 82 people die every day as a result of unintentional or accidental poisoning. Another 2,000 are treated daily in emergency rooms . Accidental or unintentional poisoning may be prevented by being aware of potential poisoning hazards.

Below are some tips that might help keep you and your loved ones safe from unintentional or accidental poisoning:

Place the National Poison Control number near every home telephone and save it on your cell phone 1-800-222-1222 The line is open 24 hours 7 days a week

If you call the poison control center or a doctor in a poisoning emergency have the poison’s original container and the label with you.

Follow directions on the label when you give or take any medications.

Read all warning labels and adhere to warnings!

When taking medications at night, turn on a light and check to see if you have the correct amount of the right medicine

Check with your doctor to avoid drug interactions if you are taking more than one prescription medicine at a time

Keep all medications in their original bottles or containers

Never share or sell your prescription medications

Keep all prescription and non prescription medicines in a safe place that can only be reached by people who give or take them. (Keep out of the reach of Children)

Store all medicines and household products out of sight in a childproof cabinet where a child cannot reach them.

Do not put your next dose of medication on the counter or table where children can reach them.

Don’t become distracted while taking medicine.

Check expiration dates on unused prescription and over the counter medications and safety dispose of those that are past their expiration date.

Secure child safety caps and immediately put medications and household products away when done with them.

If guests are in your home, make sure they store their medications where children cannot find them.

Do not store cleaning items and foods together.

Do not call medicine “candy” or any other name that would be attractive to children

Identify any poisonous plants you may have in your home or yard and keep them out of the reach of children

Pets can be accidentally poisoned as well. Be mindful of what you feed your pets. Chocolate for example can poison and kill a dog. Don’t spray or store cleaning or pesticide products near pet food or water dishes and immediately clean up spills and leaks of all such products

If a poisoning does occur :

Remain Calm and call 911 if the victim has collapsed or is not breathing. If the victim is awake and alert call the poison control center 1-800-222-1222 The following information will be helpful and might be asked for: The victims age and approximate weight, the time of poison exposure, the address where the poisoning happened, and the container or bottle of the poison if available. Stay on the phone and follow the instructions from the emergency operator or poison control center.

For more information contact the Center for Disease Control and Prevention http://www.cdc.gov/HomeandRecreationalSafety/Poisoning/index.html

Laughter reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine (adrenaline), dopamine and growth hormone. It also increases the level of health-enhancing hormones like endorphins, and neurotransmitters. Laughter increases the number of antibody-producing cells and enhances the effectiveness of T cells. All this means a stronger immune system, as well as fewer physical effects of stress.
Laughter is a Physical Release:

Have you ever felt like you “have to laugh or I’ll cry”? Have you experienced the cleansed feeling after a good laugh? Laughter provides a physical and emotional release.
Internal Workout:

A good belly laugh exercises the diaphragm, contracts the abs and even works out the shoulders, leaving muscles more relaxed afterward. It even provides a good workout for the heart.

Distraction:

Laughter brings the focus away from anger, guilt, stress and negative emotions in a more beneficial way than other mere distractions.

Perspective:

Studies show that our response to stressful events can be altered by whether we view something as a ‘threat’ or a ‘challenge’. Humor can give us a more lighthearted perspective and help us view events as ‘challenges’, thereby making them less threatening and more positive.
Social Benefits of Laughter: Laughter connects us with others. Just as with smiling and kindness, most people find that laughter is contagious, so if you bring more laughter into your life, you can most likely help others around you to laug

h more, and realize these benefits as well. By elevating the mood of those around you, you can reduce their stress levels, and perhaps improve the quality of social interaction you experience with them, reducing your stress level even more!

No matter whether you laugh after hearing a joke, experiencing a funny situation, or watching a laughing rolling crazy critter stuffed animal, keep it up. Laughter is good for you. Laugh out loud!

If an emergency situation occurs while you are at work. Do you know the emergency preparedness plan for your workplace? Many companies have been pro-active in preparing disaster plans and communicating them to their employees. However, many employees do not know what their workplace disaster or emergency plan is for both major or minor disasters. If you don’t know what the plan is for the building in which you work, please make it a point to ask. Know multiple ways to exit your building, participate in workplace evacuation drills and consider keeping some emergency supplies in the office. At the very least emergency masks and disinfecting solutions may be carried in a briefcase or a purse. Be Safe Plus carries emergency supplies including those for air borne protection, sanitation and other emergencies in the emergency preparedness section of our website
